Reading and understanding records
The comprehension of the documents can sometimes be difficult for many reasons: the lack of knowledge of the Italian language, the spelling, the abbreviations of the names and surnames, the religious formulas in Latin or the expressions taken from the local dialects.
Below you will find some help with comprehension:
- Our glossary of formulas and terms found in parish records,
- Italian first and last names,
- Glossary of old trades,
- Online etymological dictionary,
- Keywords in Latin records,
And examples for transcribing and translating records:
- Full translation of the marriage of Antonio SCOTTO DI VETTIMO to Elisabetta Maria COSTAGLIOLA D'ABELE in 1788,
- Simple translation of the marriage of Onofrio Jacinto SCOTTO to Portia FIORENTINO in 1637,
- Full translation of the baptism of Catarina DELLA ROCCA in 1734,
- Full translation of the death of Nicola COSTAGLIOLA D'ABELE in 1799.

If, despite your attempts, you still have problems with an act or if you would like to have it transcribed and translated, you can order a full translation or a simple translation (rates vary depending on the type of translation, the type of document and the year). A volunteer will then make the requested translation and send it to you.
