"Preserve and understand our origins"

Racines. Procida and the mediterranean voyage

From January 23 to March 20, 2025 at the Italian Cultural Institute in Marseille

This project tells the story of these Procidians who reached the coasts of southern France and North Africa in the nineteenth century.

In Algeria, occupied by France from 1830, a multitude of ports developed and welcomed these seasonal fishermen from Procida and Ischia who lived aboard their boats. Over the years, the flow increased and the first families were born. In 1889, with the law on compulsory naturalization, they became French citizens. Their lives changed radically in 1962, the year of Algeria's independence, when they were forced to leave for France to reach Marseille and other French cities on the coast and in the interior.
